Works on $2M Culinary Center Begin

Work has commenced on the construction of the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College´s Culinary Arts Centre and is scheduled to continue for the next eight months.

This was confirmed by Assistant Secretary with responsibility for projects in the Premier´s Office, Mrs. Elvia Smith Maduro.

The excavating phase of the work began last week and included the re-clearing of land, the building of a site office and excavation for foundation works.

Mrs. Smith Maduro said the excavating works are, "preparatory works for the larger scope of works needed to erect the culinary arts centre. This excavation phase is expected to last for a few weeks."

On August 18, the local firm of Quality Construction Ltd. signed a jointly funded contract by the Government of the Virgin Islands and the European Commission for the building, construction, electrical and mechanical works for the teaching laboratories of the culinary arts centre.

The project valued at US $2.2M will receive US $956,933.10 funding from the European Commission. Once completed, the culinary arts centre is expected to enhance the Territory´s tourism product and provide a needed service for the region as it is expected to be a Centre of Excellence.

Government remains vigilant in its search to provide quality hospitality training and opportunities for its citizens as it seeks partnerships to strengthen the Territory´s economic growth.
